A student paramedic with a resident

Five student paramedics from Oxford Brookes University have completed a rewarding placement at a Carterton care home, describing the experience as both eye-opening and invaluable to their professional development.

Chris Botha, Isabel Moore, Lauren Watts, Joseph Ridgway and Marcus Suntharalingam each spent two weeks at MHA The Homestead, where they worked closely with residents and supported staff in meeting a wide range of care needs. The home provides residential and residential dementia care for 68 residents, with the students spending much of their time supporting those living with dementia.

As part of their paramedic science qualifications, the students are required to undertake placements that broaden their understanding of patient care across different settings. During their time at The Homestead, they assisted with daily care, engaged with residents, and even supported staff and residents on day trips — an experience they all said they particularly enjoyed.
